Humble Pie(Sung to the tune of American Pie, with apologies to Don McLean)

A long long time ago
I can still remember how the Mets they used to make me smile
And I knew if they had a chance
That they could make Atlanta dance
And sit atop the NL East for awhile

But September made me shiver
With every move Bobby delivered
Bad news in the dugout
The bullpen couldn't get an out

I can't remember if I cried
Always the bridesmaid, never the bride
And anger quelled from deep inside
The day the playoffs died

So… Bye bye, Bobby Valentine
Tried to make the playoffs
But you went three and nine
Depressed Met fans are drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin' this'll be the day Bobby dies
This'll be the day Bobby dies

With our team, we were all in love
We all had faith in Ordonez' glove
'Cause Ralph Kiner told us so
We all believed in Johnny O
Can Benitez save our mortal souls
Rickey, can you teach me how run that slow

Well I know that if we try real hard
That we can save the wild card
Here's to hoping that the Reds lose
Man, I got those "missing the playoffs again" blues

Got hit by the Braves in a Mack Truck
Got swept by the Phillies, man we suck
And I knew that we were out of luck
The day the playoffs died

We were chanting… Bye bye, Bobby Valentine
Tried to make the playoffs
But you went three and nine
Depressed Met fans are drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin' this'll be the day Bobby dies
This'll be the day Bobby dies

Now for ten years we've been on our own
Why oh why pitch to Chipper Jones?
That's now how it used to be
Think way back to 1973
With Koosman, Matlack and The Seav
Now we're left praying for a hit from Bobby B

Oh and while Bobby V was looking down
Bobby Cox stole the division crown
The season was adjourned
A guilty verdict was returned
Tell me why Bobby went to Cook just then
With Franco loosened in the pen
Hey look, Chipper went yard again
The day the playoffs died

We were chanting… Bye bye, Bobby Valentine
Tried to make the playoffs
But you went three and nine
Depressed Met fans are drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin' this'll be the day Bobby dies
This'll be the day Bobby dies

Helter Skelter in a summer swelter
Paul Byrd made Shea feel like a homeless shelter
Eight games out and falling fast
Stuck in the right lane we can't pass
With the Reds and Astros closing fast
And Paul Wilson on the sidelines in a cast

Once the playoffs smelled like sweet perfume
But the Mets began their annual swoon
We all got up to leave
To hell with 'Ya Gotta Believe'
With F-A-N on in the car
We'll watch the playoffs from afar
As Piazza tries to break par
The day the playoffs died

We started singing… Bye bye, Bobby Valentine
Tried to make the playoffs
But you went three and nine
Depressed Met fans are drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin' this'll be the day Bobby dies
This'll be the day Bobby dies

Oh and there they were all in one place
One game out in the wild card race
With no time left to start again
So Rickey be nimble, Roger be quick
Any games left at Candlestick?
Hey Bobby, do you think you've got a friend?

And as I watched the Reds take the stage
My hands were clenched in fists of rage
Will wonders never cease?
A three run shot by Pokey Reese?!
And the losses climbed into the night
Oh yes it's been our yearly rite
I saw Steinbrenner laughing with delight
The day the playoffs died

He was singing… Bye bye, Bobby Valentine
Tried to make the playoffs
But you went three and nine
Depressed Met fans are drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin' this'll be the day Bobby dies
This'll be the day Bobby dies

I met a girl who sang the blues
And I asked her for some happy news
But she just smiled and turned away
We're not proud to root for the Mets
But it could be worse we could be the Jets
Hey at least our star free agent still can play

In the streets of Flushing children screamed
The vendors cried and the poets dreamed
By the GM not a word was spoken
Bobby's ego cannot be broken
And the three men that I hate the most
Steinbrenner, Chipper & the Mets head coach
They caught the last train for the coast
The day the playoffs died

And we kept singing… Bye bye, Bobby Valentine
Tried to make the playoffs
But you went three and nine
Depressed Met fans are drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin' this'll be the day Bobby dies
This'll be the day Bobby dies

They were singing bye bye Bobby Valentine
Tried to make the playoffs
But you went three and nine
Depressed Met fans are drinkin' whiskey and rye
Singin' this'll be the day Bobby dies
